Remove Backgrounds in Photoshop with Refine Mask

Background removal is an important skill that everyone must know as a photographer. To learn that, you must have the potential and the zeal to practice it with full enthusiasm! There comes a time when you become an expert in removing the backgrounds so well that you don’t even need a professional photo editor to work for your picture editing task. 

 

Today I am going to discuss a really simple method that is used in Photoshop to remove the backgrounds. Let’s see what it is:
  • Open the image in Photoshop that you want to remove background for. I am using an image with white background so if you want to achieve the same results, take a white background image.
  • Now draw a rough selection using the magic wand tool. No need to be perfect as you can do it later on. Go to Refine Edge/Mask Dialog.
  • A dialog box will appear where you have to choose edge detection to select the hair. Adjust Edge will work fine because it is an easy way to manipulate the selection. Next, the contrast option works perfectly to sharpen the edges and if the image has soft edges, the results would be great.
  • Now, at the bottom, you will see an option called Decontaminate color which will remove the bleeding color from the background. In this image, the background color is white so there might be some problem removing that.
  • Next, in the drop down menu, select the Output to select the adjustments to be applied to the selection or the new layer. To get the desired outputs, multiple rounds of refine edge are applied.
  • Once done with the rounds of refine edges, you will get the targeted results. Either you can place the subject on a new background with the better outlook or save the image as it is in the PNG format. Things are limited or unlimited according to your imagination so be creative with your imagination and achieve what you wish to.

Use your brains and implement the various methods to remove the backgrounds in Photoshop. The methods vary according to the complexity of the images so special attention must be paid to edit the images flawlessly. It is as easy as editing the image for color correction so go ahead and give your images a new look.
